Water Restrictions at Akuna Bay

Wednesday 23 March, 2005

As many of you may be aware there has been some controversy over the legality of washing of boats in the Marina. There has been a belief that as the water is from a tank in the National Park, it is not covered by the Sydney Water Restrictions.

Following is an extract from a letter to the Marina from Sydney Water, it makes the situation quite clear. The entire letter may be viewed in the Marina office if required (see Richard Wolf).

"As it appears the water supplying the Marina is being fed from Sydney Water's main supply, the Marina, and the customers on the Marina, MUST abide by the current water restrictions."

"That is, customers are not permitted to use a hose to clean the boat exterior, and may only use a hose for flushing of boat engines and cleaning of bilges and essential safety components on boat trailers including brakes and wheels using a hand-held hose fitted with a trigger nozzle or high pressure water cleaning equipment."

"Boat exteriors may only be washed and rinsed with a bucket."

There are other options for washing boats, which can include getting your own special exemption from Sydney Water or using a professional boat detailing company on a regular basis (it's not as expensive as you may think!).

In summary, I believe that if Metropolitan Sydney is subject to water restrictions, common sense says we, as responsibe boat owners, should all comply with such restrictions.
Should there be other issues or options that I may be unaware of, please let me know and I will be happy to add them to this WebSite.
