Akuna Bay Cruising Club

What a typical Australian scene as we celebrated Australia Day on a warm, sunny Saturday afternoon at Refuge Beach!! See the photos of Members enjoying raft-ups on the Refuge Bay moorings and the smoky conditions. With a strong turnout for drinks on Refuge Beach in the afternoon I think that a great day was had by all regardless of the smoke!
On Friday night we enjoyed a great Australia Day BBQ provided by D'Albora's marina management on a warm balmy night at the BBQ area near A arm. It was an excellent turn-out of D'Albora customers with a mix of both ABCC members and non-members - an opportunity to meet with other boaties and spread the Club message to potential members! Thanks to Clemens, David, Richo and the whole team for their hospitality!
On Saturday we were off to celebrate Australia Day on the water! Club member's boats (many down from Brisbane Waters) were rafted up on the Club moorings in Refuge Bay. At 3pm we congregated on Refuge Beach enjoying low tide and each other's company. This venue provides a great opportunity for Cowan Creek based Members to catch up with our Central Coast friends in particular and we all enjoyed an afternoon on the beach. The best decorated boats and people were judged to be Frygirl (Ron Mussalli) and Joanne Rolfe from Summerwind and the prizes of Yellowglen sparkling, Aussie tea towel and stubby holder were awarded accordingly.
However the weather gods were at play and backburning above America's Bay became a little more intense with the Northerly wind pushing in hard during the afternoon. Of course backburning had been a response to the substantial bushfire which burned from West Head road down to Refuge Bay the previous weekend after igniting during a lightning strike at the end of "our hottest day" where the temp hit 46.5 degrees in the shade at the marina.
A bit of smoke floated around us but not an issue as the Sunday morning arrival of the wet weather associated with the former tropical cyclone sent most boats scurrying back to their marinas. I am pleased that another Aussie Day function was well supported by Members, friends and kids.

See you at the next event,
