Akuna Bay Cruising Club

The "UPSTAIRS" Blue Beach Ball

Monday 21 March, 2011

The weather turned against us once again, but only after several boatloads of members had already set out and 'claimed' Hallett's Beach on Friday night. Back at Akuna on the Saturday morning, there was much discussion as to the feasibility of setting up on the beach in the predicted weather conditions. Considering the very few options we had, it was unanimously decided (good call Jeff) to set up the upstairs Clubroom for our Blue Beach Ball.

Once the decision was made, Marcia and her team of enthusiastic helpers set to work to convert the boring old clubroom into a seriously BLUE and spectacular environment. And how good did it look!!

After contacting the members who had already anchored at Hallett's, we found they were already more than settled, having rafted several boats together just off the beach. They decided that in view of the weather, they would stay and have a little function of their own, probably an intelligent decision. "Galene" and "My Dream" opted to risk life and limb, and travelled all the way back to Akuna in the rain to join the UPSTAIRS gathering.

The evening was a great success, as confirmed by the photo gallery, with almost fifty member and friends enjoying a colourful (mostly blue) evening of fun, fellowship and great food. Fortunately the decision not to head to Hallett's was more than vindicated, as the heavens opened numerous times during the evening, and continued unabated the following morning.

The Committee will consider changing the Beach Ball date next year, as the last two have been seriously affected by the weather.

Whatever decision is made next year, someone will need to work closely with the weather Gods.
