Leif Emmett Albertson - RIP Old Mate

Tuesday 04 May, 2010

ALBERTSON, Leif Emmett
Passed away suddenly on 22nd April 2010. Late of Forbes, formerly of Dundas Valley. Beloved husband of Sandra. Loving father of Rochelle, Nicola, Kim, Cathy, Mark and Dean. Grandfather of many. Forever loved and remembered by his family and friends.

One of the marine industries most colourful characters is no longer with us. Leif (larger than life) Albertson has been called by the Skipper upstairs, no doubt to help in berthing a few boats.

A terrible shock to learn of Leif's passing last week, he was a guiding light to myself and many other members of the Akuna Bay Cruising Club. Leif was always available to help our members with boat handling, and his loud booming voice was always helpful and constructive.

I first met Leif in 1998, after a recommendation from Mike Gaffikin, as I needed some experienced help to bring a 38' boat to Sydney from the Gold Coast. At that time I had been driving motor cruisers for several years, and thought I was pretty competant (never had a bingle). In three days of coastal cruising with Leif, I realised how little I really knew and, more importantly, how lucky I had been. Our paths crossed regularly over the passing years, and Leif was always the same lovable character, never forgetting his trip with me in "Moonshadow".

Both my wife Jenny and myself were blessed to know and learn from Leif, we still refer to our main berthing rope as our "Leif "rope.

Rest in peace old mate.
