Akuna Bay Cruising Club

Commodore's Message - February 2006

Monday 06 February, 2006

Well there are so many things happening at the Club.
With the long week-end associated with Australia Day we had an excuse to celebrate the occasion. There is an article on the Club's day in the "Club News" section. It was a great day with the Club boats trying to out-do each other with their decorations, and then the beach scene and activities. A must for next year, many thanks to Mike McLaren for organising the day.

Next up is the Beach-Ball which is on Saturday 18th February in the late afternoon and evening at Hallett's beach. The cost is $60 per head. Food, entertainment and fun are provided. Please bring your own chairs, drink and - if you do not like plastic plates, cutlery and glasses - bring your own. If you have that favourite piece of Silverware (for example, candelabra, wine coolers, etc) bring them too.

Dress is as per (check the photos from last year's event on the web site photo gallery) formal from waist up and beach formal bottoms. There is good anchor holding in the bay adjacent to the beach. There are lucky door prizes of $150 fuel and a hamper for two from "As You Like It" Catering - both donated by d'Albora's. There will be some other spot prizes on the night.

We continue to have our moorings damaged by people cutting the ropes, and dragging them. Please observe the club rules in relation to the use of the moorings. We also have some people who are no longer currently financial members using the moorings. We plan soon to issue stickers to indicate currency of membership, as is done with other clubs - more on that one later. If you see others damaging our moorings please let us or Waterways know their registration details.

The committee has recently sent a list of our major concerns to the Marina Management regarding some of the issues surrounding life at the Marina. Once we have received a response we will publish the feedback on the web site.

Membership, as with all clubs, waxes and wanes. We have a strong core of members as well as many new members who are coming along to the events. We do have a few vacancies and welcome boaties from the Marina - both power and sail. If you know of anyone who might be interested in coming along please let one of the Committee know.

One of the issues we do have is that of insurance. The Club is responsible to make sure that we have a proper copy of your insurance renewal so if you have not already forwarded this to Marcia or Mike will you please do so. This insurance is, I understand, also required to be in place to hold a place in the Marina.

Please also be aware that there have been many complaints from the Marina inhabitants regarding the speed and wash being caused by the many people who use the boat ramp. Some believe that, because they only have small boats, they don't have to follow the rules. In one instance a trailer boat was making such a large wake that the result was a broken electrical tower on H arm. The Waterways people have been patrolling and if you see any of this behaviour please report it to Waterways, even if you only have their rego number.

A few of the members have tried the catering service offered by the new catering service As You Like It Catering and the reports are very good. Contact Rodger on 02 99138593 or 0414-287405. These guys have donated hampers for the club as giveaways. They can cater for lunch, weekends or "as you like it".

See you on the water....
Stephen Smith.
