Akuna Bay Cruising Club

Commodore's Message

Thursday 21 April, 2005

We enter the 'cooler' months with a couple more very successful Club events strong in our memory.

Friday, April 15th saw about 30 members in the Clubroom listening to a fascinating presentation by Chris Gillett, National Commodore of the Australian Volunteer
Coastal Patrol. Arguably one of the best speakers we've had in a while, Chris held our attention for well over an hour and certainly convinced us of the value of this wonderful volunteer organization.
Speaking from experience (and an Associate Member), be assured they are great friends to have on the water should you encounter any sort of a problem. A membership application form is being emailed to all ABCC members and I encourage you to join and support this great organization.

As a result of the talk there was also significant interest in having the AVCG run a couple of courses at Akuna Bay, suggestions were for a Radio Operator course and a Navigation course. Many boaties do not realize that you NEED A LICENCE to operate a marine VHF Radio and most of us have these and use them regularly !!

A radio course could be run at Akuna Bay over 2 Friday nights and would result in achieving a radio operators licence, thereby making you 'legal'. If you are interested in such a course, please let me know by email PROMPTLY and we'll get the ball rolling.
Also let me know if a Navigation course would be of interest, the costs for these courses are very reasonable and would certainly enhance your boating knowledge.

Saturday, April 16th was our annual Peat's Bite lunch, which was supported by almost 40 Club members who were treated to the usual "Peat's Experience", which included a night on the marina, followed by a hearty breakfast on the boats on Sunday morning before we made our weary ways back to home base. Another great Club get-to-gether!

For Members making the annual pilgrimage to the Sanctuary Cove Boat Show, we have a dinner organized for the Friday night 20th May. Details are in the 'Events' link should you wish to join us.

Remember the Club is solely for the benefit and enjoyment of Members. Ideas and comments are always appreciated and they do help make the WebSite more interesting. Contributions are not only welcomed, we encourage them, so let's have 'em folks.

See you on the water
