Akuna Bay Cruising Club

Commodore's Message

Saturday 01 September, 2012

Dear Members

I would like to provide a quick update on developments since the Annual General Meeting. As you know the meeting was again held on MV Matilda on Saturday August 11 but unfortunately we had one of those cold, blustery August days. Nontheless, all who attended enjoyed the delicious buffet lunch and the afternoon's festivities while cruising our beautiful harbour.

The Meeting provided a review of the 2011/12 year and elected a new Committee for 2012/13 which consists of:

Commodore Jeff Sheehan
Vice-Commodore Brian Budden
Treasurer Margaret Taylor
Secretary Ian Franklin
Committee David Bornstein, Frank Gardner, Barry Southern, Trisha Sheehan, Bob Taylor

I would like to welcome Trisha, Barry and Bob on board while thanking Kim Murray and Warren and Wendy Armour for their service to the Club. In particular Kim received a plaque recognising her 11 years' contribution.

The new Committee will meet in September to map out the 2012/13 Calendar with the first event in October so please provide your input and ideas on new events or activities to myself or any Committee Member. The Calendar will be posted on www.akunabay.org.au as always.

An issue was raised in the Meeting around the absence of slipping facilities at the marina since early May and the adverse business impact on the operator of the facility, Boatfix. In the last week I raised this by email with Marcus Anketell, CEO of d'Albora's, who expressed their frustration about the delay (due to the contractor becoming insolvent) and their concern about the impact on the business. The travel-lift is back on site. They expect repairs to be completed and the travel-lift to be operational again in a week. Members are encouraged to support our marina businesses such as Boatfix.

Also the invitation has been extended by marina manager Clemens Overdijk to ABCC Club Members to attend the Middle Harbour Social Club event at The Spit on October 14. Marina berths are available so please book them through the marina office and RSVP for the function ASAP.

Clemens has also advised me that overnight manned security will return to the marina within the next month. He has advised that "Australian National Security (1300 300 360) will commence security at the marina soon. The combination of 7-day a week CCTV monitoring and static guards during the evenings on weekends will provide the anticipated security as requested by our boat owners". Given the Club's long-held concerns regarding the lack of manned security overnight in such a remote location this is a very welcome move by management.

With better weather forecast we can look forward to an enjoyable and active Spring/Summer boating season for Club Members with a range of activities on offer. As always with the ABCC we will plan to enjoy many a convivial social get-together with friends aboard our boats and at cafes/restaurants over the coming season. If you have any other issues or ideas please let me know. Cheers!

Happy and Safe Boating

Jeff Sheehan
