Akuna Bay Cruising Club

Commodore's Message - May 2010

Wednesday 12 May, 2010

Just last Friday we enjoyed the sixth annual Trivia Night conducted by Frank and Janet Gardner. Four tables totalling 20 Members, friends and family set up in the Clubroom and were treated to an extremely interesting, testing and amusing series of questions compiled by our quizmasters, with a table full of prizes as our rewards. The competition was intense and tables became extremely competitive with each other. I would like to sincerely thank Frank and Janet again for the effort put in to arranging a most enjoyable evening.

We also farewelled those Members who are departing on the most exciting of boating adventures - cruising north to enjoy the warmer climate of the Whitsunday Islands over winter. On Friday we had "My Dream" (Bill McGowan and Barry Southern), and "Galene" (Bob & Bernadette Woolacott and Rob Green), accompanied by "Cannon" (Scott and Kim Murray) for the leg up to Port Stephens. They slipped their moorings to overnight in Refuge Bay before heading out at dawn on Saturday.
"Sez-am" (Bob Taylor, Keith Turner and Mike McLaren) headed out on Monday to join the migration northwards. "Cannon" returned to Akuna on Tuesday but the other boats are making passage to Coffs Harbour, the Gold Coast (the Sanctuary Cove Boat Show is on the agenda, of course) and eventually Hamilton Island and Airlie Beach. Some boats will be up north for up to five months and I'm sure the experience of cruising our tropical northern waters will be a memorable and unforgettable experience. Having done a boat charter last year in the Whitsundays I am extremely jealous but maybe next year!

I would like to wish all Members cruising on the boats a safe and enjoyable voyage and the continuation of favourable sea and weather conditions. To follow their adventures we will have updates from the crews posted on the website (www.akunabay.org) but you are invited to track "My Dream's" exploits on Bill McGowan's blog (http://www.mydreamblogg.com/).

As you know we have been raising money for Breast Cancer Research recently (while also having a good time!) at various Club events. At the "pink" Beach Ball we raised $600, at the Charity Golf Day and the shaving of Scott Murray's head another $700 so we have been able to donate a total of $1,300 split between the National Breast Cancer Foundation and the Sydney Breast Cancer Institute. Thank you for giving so generously of your time and money to support this worthy cause, which we know has touched some Club Members as well as other women in our lives. In particular thank you to Barry and Marcia Southern for organising and accommodating the Charity Golf day at their home in Killara.

We have finalised our Social Calendar for mid-2010 and we will email information but please watch for updates on the ABCC website. The June 12-14 Long Weekend raft-up in Smith's Creek will have a Letter "S" dress theme and we expect to emulate last year's very enjoyable weekend, so please join in!
At the end of the Club year we are required to have an Annual General Meeting and this has been set for Saturday August 21st on board the catamaran MV Matilda cruising Sydney Harbour. This event is again being substantially subsidised by the Club so you can be assured of a fantastic value harbour cruise. At the AGM we will be reviewing the Club's operations for 2009/10 and electing the new Committee for 2010/11 so it is an important Club event. Please attend if you can - there will be a bus departing from and returning to Akuna Bay.

On a sad note, I would like to pass on the Committee's condolences to the family of Leif Albertson who passed away suddenly on April 22. Keith Turner's moving tribute to Leif, posted on the ABCC website encapsulates the contribution he made to improving many of our boating skills, his participation in Club activities and the personal presence he had as an experienced master mariner. He will be missed.

I trust you have been enjoying your Club membership through the year and the variety of activities both on and off the water has been of value to you. If you have any comments or queries please contact me at sheehanjeff@bigpond.com or on 0412 251 194.

Happy and Safe Boating
