Commodore's Message - March 2008

Sunday 30 March, 2008

Well I know many of you have been out on the water over the past weeks. It has not been such a bad season, though several weekends have been spoilt by the weather.

The Beach Ball was again a great success as is outlined separately. There were, I admit, some early anxious moments due to the weather on the Friday and the disappearance of the beach on the Saturday morning. All was well on the day however. The general consensus was that the Ball was one of the best in recent memory. However we would like your feedback on the self catering part of the experience.

I was talking to Marina Manager, Gary Crowhurst on the weekend of 29/30 March, just chewing the fat. He outlined the latest plans for the Marina and whilst the following is not the official word it does I think indicate where the issue is going.

They will be signing off this week on the basic work plan that will see the redevelopment of the entire marina. Initial work will begin on the drystack area, and the plan will include more wet berths. It is possible that the wet berths will have an extra row further out into the river allowing for wider fairways. Each fairway will be set up for particular sized boats, and there will be more space for larger (50ft plus) boats as they have a large waiting list for such craft.

The current main building will be retained and renovated. In any case there will be a period of consultation on the changes which I understand will occur during 2009. Each arm will take around a week to replace with sections being prefabricated. We will hear more on this over coming weeks.

There have also been changes at the fuel wharf with the new self dispensing system now in place. Usage instructions at the pumps, but you will need to go to the office and get a d'Albora advantage card to use the system. This is a numbered card that gives your discount structure for fuel. I have not used the new system as yet as my yacht does not use much fuel at all.
On fuel, dont forget to add some anti-algae additive to your tanks. This supposedly stops the growth of stuff in your tanks that block filters etc, that can really spoil your day out. I had not been doing this and had a very gentle reminder that probably saved me some grief.

Also watch the "fresh water" supply it has been filthy. I filled "Wilaprina" up last week unfortunately before I realised the colour of the water, and that was after filtering!

Don't forget the upcoming popular Peat's Bite weekend which will be on the 26th April, which is the Anzac day long weekend. There is a requirement to book with Geoff or Trish Sheehan for this event.

On the 9th of May we will have Frank and Janet's Famous Trivia night this will be at the marina.

Happy boating.
Stephen Smith
