Akuna Bay Cruising Club

Commodore's Message - June 2006

Tuesday 06 June, 2006

Well with winter upon us it's great to reflect how lucky we are to be living in Sydney. Even luckier that we, as ABCC members, are blessed with having the Hawkesbury and Pittwater systems to enjoy. For some of us winter is just a change to heavier clothes and keeping the clears on, not to mention smaller crowds. I hope you are all able to get out on the water over winter. To help you enjoy this time the committee has organised some interesting events for you.

The first is this coming long weekend end in June. The weekend kicks off on Friday night with a meal at the Akuna Cafe from 6.30pm. Then on Saturday we will cruise up into Brisbane Waters. We will be under the guidance of Mike Gaffikin and locally with Craig Rolfe (a new member) who are both skilled and familiar with the area. The tour leaves from Akuna at 1.00pm.

After stopping in Hardy's Bay for afternoon tea the group will head up to safe anchorages (and some pole moorings) at Saratoga. For those who want to join in we will be heading out for dinner to a local Thai restaurant highly recommended by Craig Rolfe and family. Access will be by a short dingy trip. You can, if you prefer, have dinner on your boat. Most will be leaving for other destinations south on Sunday, after cruising up into Gosford. Our Secretary Mike advised of this trip about four weeks ago. If you did not get the email and wish to go please advise Mike by phoning him on 0411 714 022, or in any case if you have not advised and are wishing to attend then also please advise Mike. Note: please advise both your intention to have dinner in the Café on Friday night and for the trip.

The second event is for the 28th July, Friday night for one of Frank & Janet's now famous Trivia Nights. This will start at 6.30 for 7.00pm. It is a bring your own everything function with food needing to be pre-cooked. There will then be a sail-away on the Saturday - the destination will be advised soon but will be within Cowan Creek at a safe anchorage. Evening will be a train crash of food - whatever people bring. Please advise us if you are coming.

The third event is our AGM which will be on Sunday 27th August and will again be on a sailing Catamaran on Sydney Harbor. It will be Club subsidised to the extent that it will be "pay one GET ONE FREE" so it works out to about $90 double for the day. There will be a guest speaker, door prizes, other prizes and lots of fun. More details later.

Finally - the October long weekend. Blank this one out for a sail-away to Sydney Harbor. Preliminary plans are to go to Darling Harbour for dinner on Saturday evening, cruise up to Lane Cove for lunch on Sunday, then back to Roseville for an overnight mooring. Return to Akuna Bay will be on Monday. If you have not done this trip then it is good opportunity to go down the coast with an escort. If you have done it before come and join the fun.

Onto some club things. Firstly the moorings are about to have their annual service. For those who don't know they are serviced annually. If you notice damage please report this to the committee as soon as possible.

At a recent committee meeting the marina staff outlined the future plans for the Marina. Very exciting. As these are firmed up we will keep you posted. It is likely that the restaurant will reopen from 4th July. We hope it does. We will keep you posted. There is a current report on the web site.
